Nintendo Still Scoring Big On Wii, Super Mario Bros.

HONG KONG - As long as Super Mario Bros. still offers fun and excitement and playing Wii games continues to be a chic way to kill time at home, why should kids -- or anyone else, for that matter -- be bothered by the financial storms in the real world? While other Japanese companies are busy revising down their profit forecasts, videogame maker Nintendo said Friday that it will generate 26% more profit this year than it initially estimated.Nintendo Logo

Nintendo (other-otc: NTDOY) raised its earnings guidance and lifted its yearly dividend for the financial year ending in March 2009 on stronger sales of its handheld game consoles, stand-alone game machines and software titles.

The Kyoto-based manufacturer said it was now expecting to post a net profit of 410 billion yen ($3.8 billion) for the full year, up 26.2% from its original estimate of 325 billion yen ($3.0 billion). The revised figure implies 59% growth in net profit from the 257.3 billion yen ($2.4 billion) that the company earned last financial year.

The company's sales forecast for 2009 was also lifted, to 2.0 trillion yen ($18.4 billion), from its previous projection of 1.8 trillion yen ($16.5 billion). Nintendo expects that it can sell 30.5 million Nintendo DS consoles and 26.5 million Wii units this fiscal year, above its earlier estimates of 28 million and 25 million units, respectively. Sales of its DS software titles are now pegged at 197 million units, compared with 187 million units in the prior outlook.

Thanks to the promising profit guidance, Nintendo said it would offer an annual dividend of 1,680 yen ($15.45) per share for this fiscal year, up from its earlier plans to pay out 1,370 yen ($12.60) per share.

Investors applauded the news, sending shares of Nintendo up 8.4%, to 51,800 yen ($476.39), on Friday.
