Not only does Metroid: Other M look fantastic in motion, it looks fast—Team Ninja fast, at least in its sidescrolling shoot 'em up moments.

Nintendo is looking to bring 3-D gaming to your DS ─ and you won't need glasses see it. Full details are expected at this year's E3.

Dubbed the 3DS, according to a statement from Nintendo, it will mark yet another evolution of the company’s popular portable gaming system. The DSi XL, which features a larger screen than previous interations, is expected to be available this month.

3-D entertainment, which has become a boon to movie studios, is quickly finding its way into the home, thanks to new television sets. Game companies also are chomping at the bit to be the first to offer 3-D gaming.

Nintendo's boast, however, is unique in that it would offer games with “3-D effects without the need for any special glasses.”

A report from the typically reliable Nikkei, writes that Nintendo "plans to give the new system a 3-D joystick and a force feedback mechanism that will let players feel the collisions of a game character." Nintendo has experimented with force feedback on the DS with the Rumble Pak add-on, originally bundled with Metroid Prime Pinball.

The Nikkei also feels comfortable enough reporting that the 3DS will feature improved wireless communication speed and battery life, but that its dual screens will be slightly smaller than that of the Nintendo DSi XL, due in North America on March 28. The Japanese news outlet also says Nintendo is "considering" adding an accelerometer for tilt-controlled games. We've heard similar reports before about motion-sensing controls, reports that Nintendo later said were "misinterpreted."

To understand how exactly they plan to do that, gamers will have to wait until E3, the massive trade show in June, where game companies unleash their newest gadgets and titles.

The Nintendo 3DS, which at this point is not the official name, will hit stores in March or April 2011. We'll have more details on the 3DS as they begin to roll out.
